Flight U-turn Pilot Passport

A United Airlines flight to China made a U-turn mid-air after the pilot realized he had forgotten his passport.

Passengers on a United Airlines flight to China experienced unexpected travel delays after the pilot forgot to bring his passport, forcing the plane to turn back to the United States.

The flight, UA198, departed from Los Angeles and was en route to Shanghai on Saturday afternoon when it had to make a sudden U-turn over the Pacific Ocean. Instead of continuing its journey, the aircraft was redirected to San Francisco, according to flight tracking data.

United Airlines later confirmed that the Boeing 787, carrying 270 passengers, had to stop in San Francisco because the pilot did not have his passport.

“We arranged for a new crew to take our customers to their destination that evening,” the airline stated in an email. The company also mentioned that affected passengers were given meal vouchers and compensation, though specific details were not provided.

Flight tracking data showed that the plane eventually landed at Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport after midnight, arriving approximately six hours later than scheduled.

This incident occurred at a time when global travelers were already facing disruptions, particularly due to a major power outage at London’s Heathrow Airport, Europe’s busiest hub, which had caused widespread flight delays the previous day.
