Nigeria Visa Overstay Penalties

The Nigerian government has announced strict penalties for foreigners who overstay their visas, with fines and potential travel bans coming into effect from August 1, 2025.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed this during an interview on Arise TV, emphasizing the government’s commitment to addressing illegal overstays.

“So this will deal with the issue of illegal overstays, and of course, there are now penalties,” he stated.

According to the minister, the new policy introduces three categories for foreign travelers—the white list, the grey list, and the black list.

“For instance, the white list is for those who obey our laws. If you are a frequent traveler and have no infractions, you will continue to have smooth access into the country,” he explained.

However, foreigners who violate visa rules will face penalties under the grey and black lists.

“Once there are infractions, there is a penalty per day, which will take effect from August 1. This will be $15 per day for overstays,” Tunji-Ojo said.

For extended violations, the consequences become more severe.

“If you overstay for more than three months, then we can ban you for five years. If you overstay for one year, you can’t tell me it’s a mistake. If I stay in my country for one year, then we will ban you for ten years,” he warned.

The new measures aim to regulate immigration, ensuring compliance with Nigerian visa laws while discouraging illegal stays. The government has assured that the system will be enforced fairly and transparently.
