Rivers Crisis Deepens As IYC Rejects Suspension Of Commissions
By Benjamin Abioye

The Ijaw Youth Council has strongly condemned the suspension of Rivers State officials, calling it a dangerous move that undermines democracy and governance.
The Secretary-General of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide, Maobuoye Nangi-Obu, has criticized the suspension of political appointees and statutory commissions in Rivers State by the state’s Administrator, Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas.
Describing the decision as an act of “military dictatorship,” Nangi-Obu accused the Administrator of deliberately dismantling democratic structures in the state.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, he expressed concern over the removal of key government officials, including the Secretary to the State Government, the Chief of Staff, Commissioners, Board Members, and Special Advisers.
“The latest announcement by the Rivers State Administrator, Vice Admiral (Rtd) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, suspending statutory commissions and boards with clear tenures in Rivers State is an affront to the rights of Rivers people and nothing short of a full-blown military dictatorship in action,” Nangi-Obu stated.
He alleged that the suspension was politically motivated, aimed at eliminating oversight mechanisms and creating an avenue for unchecked mismanagement of state resources.
“This reckless move, executed under the guise of presidential authority, is a desperate attempt to remove all possible checks and balances to facilitate the looting of Rivers State’s resources,” he warned.
Nangi-Obu further cautioned that such actions could trigger a political crisis, destabilizing the state and increasing public dissatisfaction.
He urged the people of Rivers State to resist what he called an “abuse of power” and demanded an immediate reversal of the decision.
“The people of Rivers State will not be deceived—this is not about governance; it is about consolidating power to continue the reckless looting of the state’s treasury,” he asserted.
Concluding his statement, Nangi-Obu stressed the importance of upholding democratic governance and warned against turning Rivers State into a stronghold for a select few.
“We demand an immediate reversal of this illegal suspension and a return to democratic governance. Rivers State must not be turned into the personal estate of a single individual and his cronies,” he declared.
