Former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has exposed those he described as desperate politicians as being behind rumours of his defection from the PDP.

In a statement released on Friday, Atiku described himself as a “bona fide and loyal member” of the PDP and condemned the reports as entirely unfounded.

The statement, issued by his media aide, Paul Ibe, attributed the false claims to “desperate politicians” behind a smear campaign. Atiku swiftly addressed the fabricated reports, which had circulated on a Facebook page, dismissing them as a “malicious lie” and accusing the sources of engaging in a political attack aimed at damaging his reputation.

Atiku reiterated his unwavering commitment to the PDP, stressing that such baseless rumors would not distract him from his dedication to the party and its objectives. He emphasized that the ongoing attempts to spread false information would not sway his political engagements or weaken his loyalty to the PDP.

The statement continued, “We ordinarily would not waste words on faceless social media platforms like the so-called ‘Adamawa Happenings.’ However, in light of inquiries from concerned Nigerians and credible members of the press, we are compelled to set the record straight: His Excellency Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President of Nigeria (1999–2007) and Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has not — we repeat, has not — resigned from the PDP. He remains a steadfast, bona fide, and loyal member of the party.”

Atiku Abubakar further condemned the false rumors of his defection from the PDP, which he claimed were being spread by a Facebook page with malicious intent. He described the source of the rumors as part of a coordinated effort by political operatives who were trying to create confusion and mislead the public. “This is not just fake news — it is a crude, shameless political hatchet job,” he stated.

He urged Nigerians, especially his supporters, to dismiss the fabricated reports as a “vile, vexatious ploy that deserves nothing but contempt.” Atiku Abubaka reaffirmed his dedication to the principles of the PDP and to the democratic aspirations of the Nigerian people.
