The Nigeria Police Force has issued a stern warning to a civil group, “Take It Back Movement,” over its planned nationwide protest scheduled for Monday, April 7, 2025 — the same day the Federal Government has set aside to celebrate National Police Day.

In a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police cautioned that while they respect the constitutional right of citizens to peaceful assembly, the timing of the protest appears suspect and potentially disruptive.

According to the statement, April 7 marks the official celebration of National Police Day — a newly declared annual event by the Federal Government to honor the sacrifices and achievements of the Nigeria Police Force. The day is expected to attract dignitaries from within and outside the country, including foreign Inspectors-General of Police and diplomats.

The police described the planned protest as “ill-timed and mischievous,” noting that staging a protest on such a significant day could be seen as an “unpatriotic act” aimed at discrediting both the police institution and the nation.

“This glamorous event would bring together dignitaries from all spheres of life… The rationale behind staging a nationwide protest on the same day is questionable and perceived to be a deliberate attempt to malign the image of the Nigeria Police,” the statement read in part.

The Force, under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, urged the organizers to shelve their plans and instead pursue dialogue through the proper channels of government to address their grievances.

The police emphasized their commitment to upholding the law and protecting citizens’ rights but insisted that protests must be conducted responsibly and with consideration of national interest.

The “Take It Back Movement” had announced plans to stage protests across major states, particularly in the Federal Capital Territory, to demand better governance and improved public welfare. However, the clash in date with the newly declared National Police Day has raised concerns about the intentions behind the timing.

As of press time, the group has not issued a response to the police warning.
