Protesters Block Benue Governor's Convoy

Tension rose in Afia Community, Benue State, when protesters blocked Governor Hyacinth Alia’s convoy during a security tour on Saturday.

Tension erupted in Afia Community, Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State when a group of youths, women, and children blocked the convoy of Governor Hyacinth Alia.

The governor was in the area to visit residents affected by recent armed herdsmen attacks. The incident occurred during a security assessment tour, with the governor accompanied by the Benue State Commissioner of Police, CP Steve Hassan Yabanet, and other senior security officials. The visit also included the distribution of relief materials to those impacted by the attacks.

On Saturday, the protesters, believed to be acting on the orders of a local political figure, barricaded the road near the venue for a town hall meeting. They formed a human blockade, chanting slogans such as “we no gree” in defiance of the governor’s visit.

Security personnel intervened, using minimal force to clear the blockade and reopen the road. Fortunately, there were no injuries or fatalities, though the windscreen of the police commissioner’s vehicle was damaged during the incident.

Earlier that day, the governor’s convoy had successfully visited victims of similar attacks in Logo Local Government Area before heading to Ukum. Authorities have confirmed that an investigation is underway to identify those responsible for organizing the protest. Normalcy has since been restored in the area.
