Ailing Deputy Governor Remains In Secret After Returning To Taraba
By Benjamin Abioye

After spending months in Egypt for medical treatment, Taraba Deputy Governor Aminu Alkari quietly returned to Jalingo amid tight security and restricted access.
The Deputy Governor of Taraba State, Alhaji Aminu Alkari, has been kept away from the public and the media after returning from a four-month medical trip to Egypt.
Alkari, who traveled to Egypt in November 2024 for treatment after suffering a partial stroke, spent three months there before returning to Abuja about a month ago. However, he has not been accessible to the public or the press since his return. He arrived at Danbaba Suntai Airport in Jalingo on the night of Sunday, May 4, 2025, at around 1:40 a.m., according to sources at the airport.
Airport workers confirmed to Leadership that Alkari returned on a chartered private jet. They also stated that two vehicles, believed to belong to the Taraba State government, were seen waiting for several hours at the airport before Alkari’s arrival. “We were not allowed access to the jet. It was after they left that the security personnel informed us it was the deputy governor,” one airport worker revealed.
When Leadership visited Alkari’s office behind the Presidential Lodge in Jalingo, it was found empty. The deputy governor was not present and was expected to resume work the following Monday. A close relative, who asked to remain anonymous, told Leadership that strict orders had been given that no one should access Alkari until Governor Agbu Kefas returns to Jalingo. “His return is not about resumption. The instruction is that the governor must return first before anybody can access him or any official statement will be issued,” the relative explained.
Efforts to reach the Taraba State Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Digital Communication, Hon. Emmanuel Bello, for comment were unsuccessful. When asked about the matter, Bello responded, “Please, go and call his press secretary. I’m not his press secretary to speak for him.” It is worth noting that Alkari has not appointed a press secretary since taking office on May 29, 2023.
The situation remains unclear as the deputy governor’s handlers maintain a tight control over his public appearances and any statements related to his health or official duties.
