Peter Obi Gives Blame For Poor JAMB Results
By Benjamin Abioye

Reacting to JAMB’s 2025 UTME results, Peter Obi described the mass failure as the outcome of decades of poor investment in Nigeria’s education sector.
Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate and former governor of Anambra State, has reacted to the poor performance recorded in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
He blamed the situation on long years of neglect in Nigeria’s education system.
Obi described the results as shocking, noting that the statistics released by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) showed that out of 1,955,069 students who sat for the exam, only 420,000 scored above 200, while over 1.5 million scored below that mark.
He wrote: “A total of 78 per cent of the candidates who sat for the 2025 UTME failed the examination, a situation he described as ‘a reflection of the deep-rooted challenges in our educational system.’”
In a tweet posted on May 5, Obi expressed concern, calling the outcome a clear sign of the failure to prioritize education in national development. He said: “The latest UTME results were a reflection of the failure to invest in the education sector.”
Meanwhile, JAMB had earlier released a breakdown of the 2025 UTME results. The exam body also announced plans to prosecute over 60 candidates suspected of cheating. These individuals were arrested from different computer-based test (CBT) centres for offenses like impersonation and other exam-related crimes.
According to JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, those arrested are currently being processed by security agencies and will soon face court action.
Earlier, JAMB also explained how to verify authentic UTME results and stated that candidates with results under investigation would get specific messages such as “verification investigation” or “alleged infraction.
