The EFCC has announced plans to question Tompolo over alleged naira abuse following public pressure and a viral video from his recent birthday celebration.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed it will question Government Ekpemupolo, commonly known as Tompolo, over allegations of naira abuse.

The agency made this announcement via a post on 𝕏 early Monday morning, stating, “Nobody is above the law. Tompolo will have questions to answer!”

This development comes after Nigerians challenged the EFCC to take action following a viral video showing Tompolo at his 54th birthday celebration, where naira notes were allegedly abused. Many critics doubted the EFCC’s willingness to take action due to Tompolo’s influence and government ties.

A public debate has sparked online, with Nigerians demanding that the EFCC take action against Tompolo for alleged naira abuse. The controversy began after a viral video surfaced on social media, showing Tompolo at his 54th birthday celebration in April. In the video, the former militant leader was seen dancing while a man sprayed N1,000 notes around him.

The video, which was widely circulated on May 11, reignited criticism against the EFCC, especially regarding perceived selective enforcement of the law.

Many Nigerians, particularly on social media, have called for Tompolo’s immediate arrest over the act of naira abuse, which is considered a serious offense under Nigerian law. Tompolo, a prominent figure from the Niger Delta, holds a lucrative multi-billion naira government contract for pipeline surveillance, coastal protection, and safeguarding critical infrastructure in the region.

The viral footage of the birthday party has drawn attention to the issue of naira abuse. According to Section 21 of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act of 2007, any tampering with the naira, including spraying or dancing on it, is considered an offense. The law states that those found guilty of such acts can face imprisonment for up to six months, a fine of N50,000, or both. The CBN’s guidelines clearly state that the spraying, dancing, or stepping on naira notes constitutes an abuse of the currency, and such behavior is punishable under the law.
