President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday joined several global leaders in Rome, Italy, to witness the installation mass of the new head of the Roman Catholic Church, His Holiness Pope Leo XIV.

The momentous occasion took place at the iconic St. Peter’s Square, where the newly installed Pope, an American and the first from the United States, officially began his pontificate.

In a widely circulated video, President Tinubu was seen warmly shaking hands with Pope Leo XIV and engaging in a brief conversation with the pontiff before proceeding. The handshake was one of many exchanged by the Pope with world leaders in attendance, including U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Pope Leo XIV used the platform of his inauguration to set the tone for his leadership, calling for global unity, an end to the exploitation of nature, and an urgent need to address the marginalisation of the poor.

“We must be a Church that heals the wounds of this world—of division, of hatred, of ecological destruction, and of the disregard for the dignity of the poor,” the Pope said in his homily.

His message resonated deeply with the congregation, which included high-ranking dignitaries, religious leaders, and thousands of worshippers from around the world.

President Tinubu’s presence at the mass highlights Nigeria’s continued diplomatic engagement on the global stage, especially in matters of interfaith dialogue and international cooperation.

The inauguration of Pope Leo XIV marks a historic shift for the Catholic Church, as it embarks on a new era under a leader known for his progressive views on social justice, environmental protection, and inclusive faith.
