Akpabio Hints Rivers, Bayelsa Will Fall For APC
By Benjamin Abioye

Senate President Godswill Akpabio stated that Rivers and Bayelsa are likely to join APC soon, boosting the party’s aim to control the South-South by 2027.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has hinted that more states in the South-South region may soon join the All Progressives Congress (APC), including Rivers and Bayelsa. He made this statement during a special event organized to officially welcome Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, into the APC.
While addressing the crowd, Akpabio said he was optimistic that the entire South-South geopolitical zone would align with APC before the 2027 general elections.
He said:
“Governor Sheriff of Delta State, thank you for joining the progressive family and moving the South South in a progressive direction. Governor Umo Eno, after you, Rivers State will just tumble, after Rivers State, Bayelsa will join.”
The Senate President also celebrated the party’s recent success in Edo State, saying:
“We won election with Governor Otu (as campaign manager) and we produced an amiable Monday Okpebholo, congratulations once again for your victory.”
Governor Umo Eno had earlier in April spoken about the issues he faced in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which led him to consider joining the APC. He said that constant internal problems in PDP pushed him to make the switch. On June 6, he officially moved to APC during a ceremony in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State. Many top APC leaders and members of the Progressive Governors Forum attended the event.
Eno’s defection is part of a wider trend. In recent months, several prominent politicians have left PDP to join APC. Notably, former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike became a key figure in the APC-led federal government. Similarly, Cross River Governor Bassey Otu and several lawmakers from Bayelsa and Delta have also moved to the ruling party, signaling a significant political shift in the South-South.
