Senator John James Akpanudoedehe, a former Minister of State for the FCT and the 2023 gubernatorial candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Akwa Ibom State, has officially resigned his membership from the party.

In a letter dated June 30, 2025, and addressed to the NNPP Ward Chairman in Uyo Ward 6, Akpanudoedehe stated that his decision to leave the party was taken after “careful reflection” and was based on personal reasons.

“I write to formally tender my resignation from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) with immediate effect,” the former senator stated. “My time in the NNPP has been eventful and has offered valuable lessons. I believe it is time to move on.”

Senator Akpanudoedehe, a seasoned politician and influential figure in Akwa Ibom politics, expressed gratitude to the party’s leadership and members for their support during his time in the NNPP. He emphasized that his resignation was not borne out of grievance but a personal decision to step away from active involvement in the party.

“My decision to leave is entirely personal and devoid of any ill will toward the party or its leadership,” he noted.

The resignation letter, which was also copied to the National and State Chairmen of the NNPP, marks yet another shift in the evolving political landscape of Akwa Ibom State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Akpanudoedehe’s exit from the NNPP is likely to spark speculation about his next political move, given his history of political mobility and deep-rooted influence in the state. He previously served as a senator representing Akwa Ibom North-East and has held key roles in other major political parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC).

As of the time of this report, Senator Akpanudoedehe has not disclosed any future political affiliations.
