Tensions between U.S. President Donald Trump and billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk have escalated sharply, with Trump now hinting that the South African-born entrepreneur could face deportation.

Speaking during a press briefing at the White House on Tuesday, Trump, when asked about the possibility of deporting Musk, responded with a cryptic, “I don’t know. We’ll have to take a look.”

The fallout between the two high-profile figures came after Musk publicly criticized Trump’s flagship legislation, dubbed the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” particularly over the decision to scale back incentives for electric vehicles, a key industry for Musk’s Tesla empire.

Once one of Trump’s vocal supporters and financial backers during the 2024 presidential race, Musk’s recent stance appears to have triggered a strong reaction from the president. Trump didn’t hold back, even taking a jab at Musk’s reliance on federal support.

“We might have to put DOGE on Elon. You know what DOGE is? DOGE is the monster that might have to go back and eat Elon,” Trump quipped, referring to the Department of Government Efficiency, a recently formed agency tasked with scrutinizing federal spending.

Trump also claimed that Musk’s concerns were driven by the potential loss of electric vehicle mandates, which were scrapped in the latest version of the bill.

“He’s losing his EV mandate. He’s very upset about things, but he could lose a lot more than that,” the president warned.

Taking to his Truth Social platform, Trump further suggested Musk’s rise in the U.S. was heavily propped up by taxpayer dollars.

“Without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa,” he wrote.

Musk, who leads companies such as Tesla and SpaceX and briefly served as the head of DOGE before stepping down in May, had enjoyed a once-cozy relationship with Trump. But the tide turned after Musk accused Trump and his party of backtracking on clean energy leadership.

In response, Musk has reportedly floated the idea of launching a new political movement called the “America Party” if Trump’s spending bill makes it through Congress.

As of now, Musk has not officially responded to Trump’s latest comments.
