Yahoo-Yahoo Governors: First Lady Chased From APC Secretariat, Withdraws From Senate Race
In a development that is bound to reecho the allegation of Yahoo-Yahoo governors in the All Progressives Congress, APC, the First Lady of Ondo State, Betty Akeredolu was on Saturday chased out of the Imo State secretariat of the party after a consensus method was adopted to torpedo her bid for the Senate.
GWGNG reports that Betty Akeredolu who is from Imo State had galvanized some sections of the electorate in support of her bid to represent her senatorial constituency in Imo State.
However, party stakeholders had to her chagrin resolved to adopt a consensus method to elect the candidate.
Mrs Betty Akeredolu, however, refused and insisted on contesting.
Her insistence and determination to contest according to a Daily Trust report made her to storm the party secretariat to protest but was turned back by equally determined party stakeholders who were against her bid.
As the police tried to control the crowd, there was stampede as both journalists and delegates who had also arrived for the exercise scampered for safety.
The development led the Police into chasing the Ondo First Lady and her supporters away from the secretariat.
Addressing journalists at the gate of the secretariat, the First Lady said that it is injustice to allow aspirants to campaign only to be told that the party had adopted consensus option.
Betty said;
” I am insisting that we must go by delegate election. I cannot waste time and resources campaigning only to be told that candidates would emerge by consensus. We must vote and if I lose gallantly, I will accept the result.
“Consensus my foot. If men agree to consensus, I won’t agree. After spending my time and money, you are now telling me about consensus and all these while we have been campaigning and nobody talked about consensus.”
GWGNG reports that after all other aspirants stepped down for Alex Mbata, the First Lady was forced to also withdraw from the Senate contest in protest.
GWGNG reports that her husband, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu had at the peak of the APC crisis last March accused some APC Yahoo-Yahoo governors of distablising the party in their support of the former chairman, Governor Mala Buni. Among the governors then known to be supporting Buni were Imo State governor, Hope Uzodimma.
However, GWGNG cannot point at a nexus between that and the rebuff given Mrs Akeredolu on Saturday.
