The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has expressed ignorance about the vacancy declared in 14 of the 24 seats in the Edo State House of Assembly.

Upon the claim of no communication on the issue, INEC it was revealed has yet to commence preparation for the bye-election to fill the seats.

Speaker Frank Okiye of the Edo State House of Assembly had on December 4, 2019 declared 14 seats in the House of Assembly vacant upon the non-attendance of proceedings by the persons elected.

12 of those whose seats were declared vacant were yet to be inaugurated while the remaining two who were inaugurated chose to align with the 12 and boycott the house as constituted under Speaker Okiye.

Responding to the declaration of the seats vacant, INEC’s commissioner for publicity Mr. Festus Okoye told Daily Independent:

“We don’t act on the basis of newspaper reports. We will only act when we receive official communication from the House. When we get official communication, then we will make our position known.”
