Gov. Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom has constituted a panel of inquiry to look into the collapse of a four-story building on Iman Street, off Aka Road in Uyo.
Emmanuel made the announcement while condoling with the families of relatives who were trapped and those who died in the building.
He stated that the panel’s work would be completed in one month.
According to him, if it is discovered that the building collapse was caused by negligence or wrongdoing, those responsible would face the full force of the law.

“The government has directed the Commissioner for Works and Fire Service to immediately convene an Inquiry Panel to investigate the unfortunate incident,” he stated.

Emmanuel offered his condolences to the victims’ families.
He wished the survivors a speedy recovery and directed the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Augustine Umoh, to take over the survivors’ care immediately.
The governor also thanked all first responders, rescue and security agencies, government officials, and volunteer organizations for their efforts.

Recall that the building collapsed on another building next to it on Iman Street, off Aka Road in the capital city.

According to eyewitnesses and residents of the area who spoke to Channels Television, the incident occurred around 6 p.m.

There were strong indications that some of the workers inside the building were still trapped beneath the rubble.

About two hours after the incident, officers from the state fire service began rescue operations.

This is the first building collapse in Uyo since the December 2016 Reigners Church incident.
