The Lagos State High Court, sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) has set November 8 for a trial within a trial to determine whether the confessional statement allegedly made by Miss Chidinma Ojukwu, the prime suspect in the murder of Super Tv’s Chief Executive Officer, Usifo Michael Ataga, should be admitted.

Justice Yetunde Adesanya made the decision in response to Ojukwu’s claim that the statements were obtained from her under duress and inducement rather than voluntarily.

Ojukwu, a 300-level Mass Communication student at the University of Lagos (Unilag), is on trial with her sister, third defendant Chioma Egbuchu, and second defendant Adedapo Quadri for the alleged offence.

The trio is also charged with stealing and forgery.

The defendants have been on trial since October 12, 2021, following their arraignment before Justice Adesanya.

According to the Lagos State Government which is prosecuting them, the murder took place on June 15, 2021, at a short-let apartment on No. 19, Adewale Oshin Street, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.

The defendants denied the charge.

At the resumed hearing, of the case on Thursday, Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions (DDPP) Mrs. Adenike Oluwafemi led the ninth prosecution witness Mr. Olusegun Bamidele, in evidence.

Bamidele, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), testified that Ojukwu allegedly transferred N5million from Ataga’s account on June 15, 2021, the same day she stabbed him to death for demanding more sex – according to her alleged confession as recorded on video by the police while interrogating her.
