Nigerian Airlines May Shut For Two Days As Unions Declare Warning Strike

About six aviation workers’ unions have declared a two-day warning strike action to press home their demands from the government.

According to the unions, the warning strike will hold on Monday and Tuesday.

A statement from the National Union of Air Transport Employees, the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, and the Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals conveyed the notice of the warning strike.

The Amalgamated Union of Public Corporation Civil Service Technical and Recreation Services and the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers are the other two unions engaged in the warning strike.

According to them if their demands are not met, the unions warned that they would proceed on an indefinite strike following the two-day warning strike.

 “Our unions issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Honourable Minister of Aviation and specific aviation parastatals on Feb. 7, over non-implementation of minimum wage consequential adjustments and arrears for the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet).

“…also, the refusal of the Income & Wages Commission and Office of the Head of Service of the Federation to release the reviewed Condition of Service of Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT) and Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET).

“Also planned demolition exercise of aviation agency buildings in Lagos by the Minister of Aviation for an airport city project has been strongly resisted by our union but the ministry remains adamant so we are commencing the warning strike,” the union said.

The ultimatum had since expired, and the unions claimed that the aviation minister, Senator Hadi Sirika, remains adamant in carrying out his threat to demolish the headquarters of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), NAMA, NCAA, NCAT, and NIMET in Lagos despite their entreaties towards caution.

Copies of the notice of the warning strike, signed by the general secretaries of the unions, were sent to the Lagos airport police command, all airport commandants, the Department of State Services (DSS), the chief executives of the agencies, and foreign airlines.
