Family Worried As DSS, Prison Officials Fight In Court Over Emefiele
Operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS have clashed with men of the Nigerian Correctional Service, NCS in their struggle for custody of the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Mr Godwin Emefiele.
GWG.ng reports that Emefiele was granted bail by a Federal High Court, Ikoyi Lagos in the sum of N20m pending the continuation of the hearing on November 14, 2023.
Following the court order the men of the DSS who did not oppose the bail application filed by Emefiele’s lawyers, however, positioned themselves around the court premises as they appeared to prevent men of the Correctional Service from taking him away.
The DSS, however, defended themselves with a warrant with which they sought to take Emefiele away.
The clash eventually led to a clash between the DSS operatives and the men of the correctional services. The head of the correctional services team was according to reports seriously beaten up and nearly stripped.
A brother to Mr Emefiele, George Emefiele meanwhile has expressed fear over the safety of his brother.
Speaking outside the court premises, he said:
“DSS is violating the court order. This is like a gestapo and we are doing this to our selves. I am very, very worried about the safety of my brother. This fighting is not necessary. The judge said he should be remanded in Ikoyi but the DSS are saying no.
“We pray that it ends well. Our prayer is that the Federal Government should obey the court order. He served this nation for nine good years. This is not fair and we need to make the government know that what they are doing is not right and obey .
Lawyers have been expressing serious opposition to the action of the DSS operatives in the fight with NCS men over Emefiele.
