The 2023 Politics Around Sanusi’s Deposition

The dethronement of Sanusi Lamido as Emir of Kano has thrown up underlying plots for the 2023 which before this time were masked.

Prominently, Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, has taken a position.

Barely 72 hours after his dethronement, Sanusi was appointed the Vice Chairman of Kaduna Investment Board as well as Chancellor of the State University.

Ganduje is a member of the Tinubu political family who for now remains the staying power of the embattled All Progressive Congress (APC) National Chairman, Adams Oshiomole.

El Rufai is not a man easily cowed. As Minister of the Federal Capital Territory during the Obasanjo presidency, he deployed bulldozers to return the FCT to the original plan. He even acknowledged that the move was not popular with everyone, from  powerful vested interests in the National Assembly to newcomers trying to earn a pittance.

The Kaduna State Governor recently threw his weight behind return of the presidency to the Southern part of the country, saying it would be unjustified for the North to seek to retain the Presidency after President Muhammadu Buhari might have completed his eight years.

The governor said: “The general political consensus in Nigeria is that the Presidency should rotate between the North and the South. It is not written but everyone understands it.

El Rufai is the only known face that openly visited Sanusi in Awe, Nasarawa State, where he was banished.

Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi is another astute politician with eyes on 2023 who has openly come out on the side of the embattled Sanusi.

He has come out saying Sanusi is retained as the Chancellor of the Ekiti State University, (EKSU). Fayemi had appointed Sanusi as the Chancellor of Ekiti  State University in 2019.

The trio of Fayemi, El Rufai and Sanusi were pictured in 2019 in Cape Town, South Africa in the heat of the xenophobia. They claimed to be in South Africa at the invitation of Nigerian journalist, Dele Olojede.

Political watchers however say what is playing out is the struggle for 2023.

El Rufai has been rumoured to have a desire to be running mate to Fayemi in 2023.

Some say the open display of affection for Sanusi even in his hard times by El Rufai is to send a message to Governor Abdullahi Ganduje who is an in-law to former Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi.

Ganduje is a member of the Tinubu political family who for now remains the staying power of the embattled All Progressive Congress (APC) National Chairman, Adams Oshiomole.

The court injunction to reinstate Oshiomhole as national chairman was obtained in Kano.

This group attempted to smuggle Ajimobi into the APC NWC just to keep their hold on the chairman seat in case Oshiomole losses out.

The attempt to bring in Ajimobi is, however, being resisted by Ekiti APC.

Earlier in the year, Governor Ganduje paid a courtesy visit to the national leader of the All Progressives Congres, Bola Tinubu in Lagos state.

However, the purpose of the meeting was not made public.

Ganduje is among some governors and other northern politicians rumoured to be aspiring to be running mate to the APC National leader.

El Rufai and Fayemi are said to be leading the governors who want Oshiomole removed, while Ganduje and some other governors are working tirelessly for his retention.
