President Donald Trump has won a landslide victory in the Iowa caucuses being projected to win almost 51% of the votes and with it, cementing his status as the clear frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.

In an upside to projections that he would come third, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis edged out former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley to take a distant second place with 21% of the caucus goers choosing him.

GWG.ng reports that Ms Haley came third with 19% of the caucus choosing her as the preferred candidate of the Republican Party.

Haley had been projected to take second place at Iowa and with it cement her position as the alternative candidate should the unexpected happen to throw Trump out of the contest.

While nationwide polls show Trump and the almost certain Democratic candidate, President Joe Biden running neck to neck, the same polls show Ms Haley as Republican candidate beating Biden by as much as 17 percentage points.

Trump hailed his victory in a speech to supporters while thanking the “the great people of Iowa,” said that “it would be so nice if we could come together and straighten up the problems of the world”.

Iowa is the first of the state-by-state contests where Republican voters pick their White House candidate where Trump is now set to be the most probable nominee.

Meanwhile biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy who had made some noise at the beginning of the contest dropped out of the race after a poor showing in Iowa and endorsed Trump.
