Nigeria Buys 12 AH-1Z Viper Attack Helicopters From US

The United States Department of Defense has officially confirmed a substantial arms deal with Nigeria, involving the sale of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters, valued at $1 billion. Additionally, the contract includes 32 mission computers provided by Northrop Grumman, with a separate $7.7 million contract awarded in December.

This arms sale is a response to Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges, including the Boko Haram insurgency and banditry. The purchase of these helicopters, scheduled for completion in June 2024, is a significant enhancement to Nigeria’s military capabilities.

The approval for the sale was granted by the US State Department in April 2022, encompassing not only the helicopters but also guidance systems, night vision imaging systems, and comprehensive training.

The primary goal of this military package is to strengthen Nigeria’s security infrastructure, contribute to shared security objectives, and foster regional stability. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency of the United States emphasized the importance of supporting a strategic partner in Sub-Saharan Africa to enhance the foreign policy goals and national security objectives of the United States.

The AH-1Z Viper, recognized as a multi-role attack helicopter, is versatile and designed for various missions, including reconnaissance, escort, and strike operations. This acquisition aligns with Nigeria’s broader strategy to address diverse security challenges within its borders, ranging from Islamist insurgency to widespread banditry.

In addition to the AH-1Z Viper helicopters, Nigeria’s ongoing military procurement strategy includes acquiring m-346 attack aircraft, T-129 ATAK helicopters, Agusta 109 Trekker multi-role helicopters, and Chinese-made Wing Loong II drones, among other assets.
