Senator Ndume Wants Police Orderlies Withdrawn From Politicians

Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, representing Borno South senatorial district, has urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to withdraw police orderlies from politicians nationwide, including members of the National Assembly. He shared this view during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today program.

Ndume’s perspective stems from a practical evaluation of Nigeria’s security personnel distribution. He pointed out the disproportionate allocation of police officers to VIPs, including senators and their families, amidst significant security threats such as banditry, kidnapping, and insurgency.

With approximately 300,000 policemen in Nigeria, Ndume believes that the current deployment to VIPs undermines the police force’s capacity to effectively serve the broader population.

To tackle the pressing insecurity issue, Ndume called on President Bola Tinubu to allocate significant resources to security agencies. He advocates for increased investment in weapons, funding, and manpower. Specifically, he proposes expanding the police force to two million officers and military personnel to 500,000, aiming to strengthen Nigeria’s ability to combat these threats effectively.

Despite his firm support for enhancing police and military capabilities, Ndume expressed reservations about establishing state police. He is concerned that if implemented, state governors might misuse this authority, potentially leading to abuses of power. Therefore, he believes careful consideration and safeguards are necessary before implementing such a significant change in policing structure.
