Nollywood Actor Baba Ijesha Appeals Conviction, Claims He Was Set Up
Nigerian actor Olanrewaju James, popularly known as Baba Ijesha, has filed an appeal against his conviction for sexually assaulting a minor. Recall that in July 2022, a Lagos State High Court sentenced him to five years in prison, but Baba Ijesha is now seeking to overturn the verdict.
Through his lawyer, Kayode Olabiran, Baba Ijesha claims he was set up and acted according to a script given to him by a colleague. “The appellant was invited to act in a script by his colleague, Damilola Adekoya (PW1),” Olabiran told the Court of Appeal in Lagos.
However, the Director of Public Prosecution, Dr. Babajide Martins, has urged the court to dismiss the appeal, stating that it lacks merit and is based on a misconception. Martins argued that the lower court’s judgment should be affirmed.
The appeal court has yet to deliver its ruling on the matter.
This development comes after Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo (retd.) of the Ikeja Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court found Baba Ijesha guilty of sexually assaulting a minor and sentenced him to five years in prison.
