The number of COVID-19 cases in the country crossed the 5,000 mark, on Wednesday after 193 new cases took the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 5,162.

After a glimmer of hope with the fall of new cases, especially in the hotbed of Lagos and Kano, the number of new cases of COVID-19 in the two states spiked again on Wednesday with the two states producing 58 and 46 cases respectively making 53% of the total number of new cases.

That was a significant jump from the 35% the two states contributed to the total number of new cases the previous day.

However, more significantly was the distribution of new cases between the North and South with the North taking the ascendancy in the number of cases and the number of states contributing to the new cases.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control in its daily tweet of new cases across the country said:

There were three mortalities across the country the NCDC reported.

However, concern about the drift of the pandemic towards the North was reflected by the fact that 10 of the 15 states that reported new cases on Wednesday were from the North.

Even more, the 10 states and FCT reported a total of the 120 of the 193 new cases on Wednesday.

The figures are, however, more frightening for the North if the 58 cases in Lagos, the former epicenter of the country’s COVID-19 cases are removed it showed the South producing only 15 new cases compared to the 120 new cases produced in the North.

Apparently keen to stem the tide of community spread in Lagos, the state government on Thursday resolved to boost awareness of the pandemic.

The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotoso, said in a statement on Thursday that the campaign would go across the 20 Local Governments Areas  and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) of the state.

Omotoso said  the exercise was initiated after the discovery that members of the public did not comply with the directives issued by Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the lockdown was eased in the state.

”It is  disappointing that residents threw caution to the winds immediately the  governor announced the partial lifting of the lockdown imposed by the Federal Government.

‘People stormed banks without exercising caution despite the ravaging effects of the pandemic.

‘The enhanced public enlightenment campaign, which will involve LED and mobile billboards, is expected to strengthen the advocacy on physical distancing and other preventive measures.

“Information about the symptoms, prevention and sample collection centres for individuals who exhibit symptoms of COVID-19 will dominate the campaign.
