The rape and murder of Uwaila Omozuwa, a 100 level student of Microbiology Department, University of Benin has ignited several movements on the need to halt the increasing wave of rape of women.
The Nigerian social media space, on Sunday, was greeted with the news of how Uwaila was raped and murdered in a church, in Benin city, having gone to the church to read her books.
Before Uwaila’s unfortunate incident, news reports had it that twelve men raped a 12 year old girl in Jigawa State, sparking outrage on the social media.
The sad stories of incidents of rape of women in the country have fuelled the agitations for justice for women who had been raped.
Taking the agitations to the streets, protesters, on Monday in Benin City demanded that perpetrators of the heinous act against Uwaila should be brought to book, while barricading the gate of the police headquarters in Benin City.
The social media activism on the issue of rape has increased, with the hashtags #StopRapingWomen and #SayNoToRape becoming trending topics.
Many Nigerians have taken to the microblogging platform, to reiterate the need to put an end to rape of women, while demanding justice for Uwaila and Tina, who was shot by a police officer in Lagos.
