KCee, Flavour Clash Over Igbo Music
Nigerian singer Kingsley Okonkwo, known as KCee has flayed what he perceived as a dig from fellow musician Chinedu Okoli, popularly known as Flavour.
Flavour had posted a message on X (formerly Twitter), which read, “Copy copy akaria” —a phrase suggesting imitation.
This post came shortly after KCee released a teaser for his new track, ‘Netfliss,’ which some fans noticed had similarities to Flavour’s hit song ‘Doings’ featuring Phyno.
Although Flavour didn’t mention anyone directly, KCee interpreted the post as aimed at him. In response, KCee took to his own X page to call out Flavour. He asserted that he and Flavour were not on the same level and cautioned him to “pick [his] battles carefully.”
KCee further criticized Flavour for acting as a “gatekeeper” of Igbo culture, saying, “Stop trying to gatekeep Igbo culture. You’re not a custodian. I’ve been in this game before you. It belongs to all. You don’t own this genre of music.” He emphasized that his music, too, celebrates Igbo heritage and made it clear that he won’t apologize for that.
Expressing his commitment to staying true to his craft, KCee added, “People recognize authenticity. I’ll continue celebrating our culture unapologetically. Spend your energy on success, not diminishing mine.”
He explained that, though he usually avoids confrontation, he felt compelled to address the issue this time, stating, “I won’t be disrespected… I’ve come too far for anyone to downplay my sweat and hard work. HELL NO!!!!”
KCee’s response shows his commitment to his work and his pride in showcasing Igbo culture through his music, despite criticism from others.
