The lingering controversy over Chidinma Adetshina, Nigeria’s representative at the ongoing Miss Universe pageant in Mexico, has sparked fresh debates between Nigerians and South Africans online.

Adetshina, who initially faced backlash in South Africa before rising to represent Nigeria, remains a polarizing figure, with social media platforms once again buzzing with reactions.

The controversy began when Adetshina, who previously sought to compete in the Miss South Africa pageant, was disqualified after South Africans questioned her eligibility. Her subsequent decision to contest for Miss Universe Nigeria added fuel to the fire, leading to petitions from South African groups calling for her exclusion from the global stage.

One such petition, organized by Progressive Forces of South Africa, accused Adetshina of exploiting legal loopholes to compete, with activists alleging irregularities in her identity documents. The petition not only highlighted tensions but also triggered a bizarre cross-border clash between Nigerian and South African netizens, resulting in a series of online pranks that remain a hot topic.

A Battle of Wits: Nigerians vs. South Africans

During the height of the controversy, South Africans reportedly resorted to booking rides on Nigerian-based apps like Uber and Bolt. They entered random destinations within Nigeria, only to cancel the trips upon the driver’s arrival. This attempt to frustrate Nigerians quickly became a source of humor and retaliation.

Nigerians responded in kind, turning the tables with unmatched creativity. From booking nearly all available cabs in South Africa to ordering food deliveries and even requesting escorts to nonexistent addresses, Nigerians escalated the situation to the point where the management of some services, including Bolt, had to suspend operations temporarily to manage the chaos.

Nigerians Celebrate Miss South Africa’s Miss Universe Exit

The tension reignited again on Friday after Mia Le Roux, Miss South Africa 2024, withdrew from the Miss Universe competition due to health issues. Nigerians took to social media to troll South Africans, seeing the withdrawal as poetic justice for the earlier backlash Adetshina endured.

One Nigerian commentator on X (formerly Twitter) quipped,
“Spending weeks writing petitions against Chidinma, only for your own contestant to withdraw on her own volition? The universe doesn’t miss.”

As Chidinma Adetshina continues to represent Nigeria at the global stage, her journey has become a symbol of resilience for her supporters and a flashpoint of rivalry between Nigerians and South Africans. Whether she clinches the Miss Universe crown or not, the story of her participation remains one of grit, controversy, and unwavering national pride.
