The late Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja, was laid to rest in Abuja, ending a distinguished military career that spanned decades.

The funeral took place at the National Cemetery, following a series of emotional tributes and services. His body was lowered into the grave at exactly 4:41 pm, marking the conclusion of the two-day funeral rites, which began earlier in the week in Lagos. The ceremony lasted over two hours, with his casket draped in Nigeria’s green and white flag.

Lagbaja’s casket arrived at the cemetery around 3 pm, transported in a white hearse after a memorial service at the National Christian Centre in Abuja. Earlier, a service of songs had been held at the Army Headquarters Garrison Parade Ground in Mogadishu Cantonment.

The Nigerian Air Force plane carrying Lagbaja’s body had arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja around 12:15 pm on Thursday.

In another development, President Bola Tinubu awarded the late COAS, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, a posthumous honor of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR). The award was conferred on Friday during the funeral service at the National Cemetery in Mogadishu, Abuja.

The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Defence Minister, governors, and top military officials.

President Tinubu praised Lagbaja’s commitment to national security and noted that his appointment as Chief of Army Staff was one of the president’s proudest achievements since taking office. Tinubu expressed admiration for Lagbaja’s exemplary service to the nation.
