All Polytechnics To Shutdown December 2 – ASUP

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has confirmed its intention to close all polytechnics nationwide by December 2 when members will go on a national strike due to the Federal Government’s failure to meet its demands.

Comrade Abubakar J. Abdullah, the chairman of the Kaduna chapter of the union, reiterated ASUP’s position on a national strike from December 2 during a press conference on Tuesday, emphasizing that the government has not taken any meaningful steps to address their concerns.

On October 6, 2024, ASUP issued a 15-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, listing key demands aimed at resolving systemic issues affecting polytechnics. Abdullah explained that these demands are critical for improving the state of the institutions, but no action has been taken since the deadline passed.

The union’s major demands include the immediate release of the second tranche of the NEEDS Assessment Intervention fund, the implementation of a 25/35% salary increase for staff in all public polytechnics, and the resolution of outstanding arrears. Additional issues include the long-standing migration arrears for lower cadres under CONTISS-15, overdue promotion arrears, insufficient funding, and the payment of unpaid allowances.

“Unfortunately, we are yet to see any action from the government after the deadline passed,” Abdullah stated. “This inaction has left us no choice but to consider shutting down all polytechnics by December 2, 2024, if our concerns are not addressed,” he said in affirming the ASUP strike from December 2.

Abdullah stressed that the future of the country’s educational system is at stake, and the government’s failure to respond to these critical issues is damaging the sustainability and quality of education. He called on the Federal Government to engage in meaningful discussions and take immediate action to resolve the ongoing challenges.
