The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has issued a warning about a global banking malware targeting users through sophisticated phishing methods.

In a statement released by its Computer Emergency Readiness and Response Team on Monday, NITDA identified the malware as a new version of ‘Grandoreiro’. This malicious software is described as highly advanced, employing techniques such as screen overlay attacks and remote control of devices to steal sensitive information, including banking credentials and personal data.

The malware spreads primarily through phishing emails and fake websites that trick users into downloading malicious files disguised as legitimate updates or documents. Once installed, it bypasses security measures, allowing attackers unauthorized access to victims’ devices.

NITDA cautioned that this malware could lead to serious consequences, including financial loss and identity theft. To mitigate these risks, the agency urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and adopt essential security practices.

“Cyber threats like Grandoreiro are constantly evolving. Users must stay alert and implement robust security measures to safeguard their information,” the agency advised.

NITDA recommended several preventive steps, including avoiding suspicious links and email attachments, downloading software only from trusted sources, and using multifactor authentication for securing online banking accounts. The agency also emphasized updating antivirus software regularly, refraining from using public Wi-Fi for financial transactions, and closely monitoring bank accounts for unauthorized activity.

By following these measures, NITDA hopes to reduce the impact of such cyber threats and protect users from becoming victims of fraud.
