Naira Abuse Campaign Not Working, APC Chief Cries Out

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Joe Igbokwe, has called attention to the ongoing abuse of the naira in Nigeria, lamenting the widespread practice of throwing currency notes on the ground at social gatherings.

In a post shared on his Facebook page on Sunday, Igbokwe a chieftain of the APC expressed concern that Nigerians continue to abuse the naira during parties, burial ceremonies, and naming celebrations, despite the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) regulations against such actions. He questioned whether the ban on naira abuse had been lifted, urging relevant authorities to take note.

He wrote, “Let me remind the authorities concerned that Nigerians are still throwing naira notes on the ground and still walking on it at parties, burial, naming ceremonies, etc. Have we lifted the ban? So that you know.”

GWG.ng reports that the CBN and law enforcement agencies have previously taken steps to curb naira abuse, including prosecuting high-profile individuals found violating the law.

Notably, popular crossdresser Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky, was sentenced to a six-month jail term for naira abuse. Similarly, socialite and businessman Pascal Okechukwu, also known as Cubana Chief Priest, was arraigned for a similar offense. He pleaded not guilty and was subsequently granted bail.

The APC chieftain’s remarks on the continued abuse of the naira appears to be an independent effort to help stimulate public awareness over the issue.
