Nigerians Mourn Carrington: Best Envoy Ever Here!

Many Nigerians have taken to social media to render tributes to former United States ambassador to Nigeria, Walter Carrington, who died on Tuesday.

The former ambassador was regarded as a defender of democracy, who stood  against the military regime to ensure that democracy became a norm.

Confirming his death, his Nigerian born wife, Arese Carrington, in an email sent to PUNCH, said the former ambassador died peacefully surrounded by loved ones.

“It is with a heavy and broken heart but with gratitude to God for his life of selfless humanity that I announce the passing of my beloved husband Walter Carrington, former U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria and Senegal.

“He passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones at the age of 90 years old on Tuesday, August 11th, 2020. Further announcements will be made shortly.

“Walter was a loving husband, father, grandfather, cousin, uncle, friend and in-law. Ralph Waldo Emerson said…It is not the length of life but the depth of life. Walter was fortunate, his life had both length and depth, ” part of the email reads.

Reacting to his death, former vice-president, Atiku Abubakar described his death as “big loss”, noting that he played a pivotal role in establishing democratic rule in Nigeria.

“Walter Carrington was the US Ambassador to Nigeria between 1993-1997 and was married to a Nigerian, Arese, from Edo State. He played a pivotal role in the USA’s assistance in establishing democratic rule in Nigeria. His death is a big loss. He will be dearly missed, ” Atiku wrote.

Former Senators, Shehu Sani and Ben Murray-Bruce described his death as a great loss to the country.

Many Nigerians argued that Carrington is the best foreign ambassador Nigeria ever had not surprisingly the former Eleke Crescent equivalent to Nigeria’s Embassy Row is named after him.
