One person died from the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria on Wednesday as 201 new infections were recorded in 12 states and the FCT.

The new surge in new cases of the pandemic came amid fears that Lagos, Plateau and Rivers which contributed more than half of the new cases have now become  the hotbed for the pandemic in the country.

On Tuesday when the country recorded 187 new cases, Lagos had 74 new cases, Plateau 25 and Rivers 25. On Monday when 136 new cases were recorded, Lagos had 71, Rivers 23 and Plateau 12 new cases.

On Wednesday, the three states were also on top of the pack with Lagos having 77, Rivers 37 and Plateau 25 new cases.

The apprehension about the second wave is coming in the face of government and the public increasingly lowering the guards against the virus.

The new cases brought the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 58,848 with 50,358 discharged with one death bringing the toal number of mortalities to 1,112
