Mrs. Portiphar And Joseph: The Meaning Of Evil Eye

And it came to pass after these things, that his master’s wife cast her EYES upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me. Genesis 39:7.

Mrs. Portiphar with her EYES full of sexual lust had over the years cast her EYES on Joseph. This is because in the preceding verse, we are told that Joseph was a very handsome man.

Perhaps he inherited his mother, Rachel’s beauty. His father, we remember served 14 years’ labour to pay for the bride price of his mother. Genesis 29:17,30

Two other men who are described as having the kind of physique as Joseph were David and Absalom. However, none of them could control the desire for the opposite sex.

David went to the extent of even taking other men’s wives in one case even from her marital home!

But Joseph was of a different spirit and his enchanting physique became a trouble for Mrs. Portiphar.

Whether she was sexually starved or not, she hardly could control her eyes when it came to Joseph.

The eye is the gate into the mind and how the eye sees reflects what we are. All that Mrs. Portiphar saw of Joseph was sexual desire.

The bible talks about the evil eye in several places. In Deuteronomy 15:9 it is seen in covetousness, grabbing whatever it is to yourself, food, clothes, sex, anything at all and not being considerate to your neighbour by hook or crook.

Jesus tells us in Matthew 6:23 if the eye be evil, the heart will be full of darkness. NKJV describes the evil eye as a bad eye. NIV describes it as unhealthy eye.

Whatever if the eye is not good, there is no way the heart will be good. Rather it will stir unrighteousness and evil.

That was why Mrs. Portiphar could only see Mr. Joseph as a sex object, and it blinded her sense of reasoning as she covetted him.

Mrs. Eve ADAM had been in a similar situation with her quest for food and knowledge. “And when the woman SAW that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the EYES…” Genesis 3:6.

It is for this reason that the Bible warns us about the lust of the eyes – 1 John 2:16.

May God give us good eyes to behold righteousness and bring light into our bodies.
