Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala’s path to become Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) is heading towards a success with the imminent withdrawal of her only challenger, South Korean Yoo Myung-hee.

The Washington Trade Daily reported that South Korea has decided to withdraw her from the contest.

The newspaper said that South Korea was also informing the United States which is the main power backing her candidature of the decision to withdraw from the race.

The trade industry paper in a tweet said:

The WTO General Council Chairman, David Walker, had  deferred a decision on who would become the next DG  continued opposition of the Donald Trump administration to Dr. Okonjo-Iweala who was on the other hand backed by nearly all other major blocs in the WTO.

The Trump’s opposition was based on her inclination towards multilateralism in trade matters as against Mr. Trump’s inclination to bilateralism.

However, with Mr. Trump leaving the White House, South Korea with his defeat in the United States presidential election, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s momentum may have now become unassailable.
