Chelsea qualified for the knockout phase of this season’s Champions League following a hard fought 2-1 triumph over Rennes on Tuesday night with its star goalkeeper Edouard Mendy on the spotlight.

Mendy went into the game with the spectacular record of being the only goalkeeper in the tournament yet to pick a goal from his net.

Remarkably, playing against his former teammates at Rennes, that record was broken despite repeated spectacular efforts by him to save the record. His former teammates apparently knew his Achilles heel and went for it, but at the same time, Rennes was eliminated as Chelsea came out on top of an interesting encounter.

Frank Lampard’s Blues have garnered ten points from four games to book a spot in the last 16 of Europe’s elite club competition.

Timo Werner missed a sitter when the game began after an inviting cross from Calum Hudson-Odoi. Odoi, would eventually become the first goal scorer in the 22nd minute. Mason Mount’s incisive pass gave him the opportunity to beat Gomiz in goal for Rennes.

Mason Mount should have gotten the next goal of the game, but Gomiz denied him through a spectacular save. Chelsea went into the break with the one goal lead at hand.

Goalkeeping proficiency was on display as Edouard Mendy impressively sabotaged his former teammates from getting a goal twice. His persistence wasn’t enough as Guirassy cancelled out Calum Hudson-Odoi’s opener through a bullet header in the 85th minute.

A specialist of headed goals in modern day football Olivier Giroud became the hero for Chelsea in added time as he nodded in past Alfred Gomis and two defenders on the line to send Chelsea to the knockout stages and eliminate Rennes from the UEFA Champions League.
