How Nigeria Failed Leah Sharibu! Reactions Trail Second Birth In Boko Haram Captivity

Nigerians took to social media on Tuesday to lament the fate of the secondary school girl, Leah Sharibu who was abducted with her school mates in 2018 by Boko Haram insurgents. Reports emerged on Tuesday that Leah Sharibu had given birth to a second baby at the end of 2020 in the custody of Boko Haram.

Though her schoolmates were returned, Sharibu was kept behind after she refused to renounce her Christian faith for Islam as demanded by her abductors.

On Monday it was reported by a United States based group which monitors Boko Haram activities that Sharibu who was 16 years at the time of her capture had given birth to a second child following her forceful marriage to a Boko Haram commander.

The news of the continued incarceration of the school girl and the seeming Federal Government abandonment of her case brought emotions to many Nigerians of the state of insecurity in the country and the seeming incapacity of the present administration to respond to the issue.

Responding to the news that Leah Sharibu had given birth after marriage, the California based preacher and political activist, Reno Reno Omokri said:

It is not possible for a girl that was abducted and held at gunpoint to consent to sexual intercourse, let alone marriage. Leah Sharibu is a hostage. I spoke to her father. We still want her back even if she has given birth to 10 babies. Still #FreeLeahSharibu!

Several others who reacted to the development flayed the government with some also saying Nigeria as a society had failed Leah Sharibu.
