Rev Yonggi Cho Korea Church Leader Dies At 85

The Rev. Cho Yonggi, credited at one time as pastor of the world’s biggest church has died. He was aged 85.

Pastor David Yonngi Cho was also popular with inspiring many of today’s leading Pentecostal leaders with big dreams of founding their own big churches.

By 2007 his Yoido Full Gospel Church an off-shoot of the (Assemblies of God), had the world’s largest congregation, with a claimed membership of 830,000.

Pastor Yonggi Cho who left full time pastoring in 2008 was a major inspiration not just for South Korean protestants, but the international Christian community.

The Yoido Full Gospel Church today has a membership of almost 500,000 with hundreds of pastors and missionaries working in South Korea and abroad.

He was also a prolific author who wrote some of the faith books that inspired many around the world and Nigeria.

The church he started in 1958 with another Christian brother Choi rose from the ashes of the Korean war and brought light into what was though as the spiritual darkness that was symbolic of the war between North and South Korea.

The church is today led by Young Hoon Lee.

Yonggi Cho, however, till his death was considered as emeritus pastor. He died at a hospital in Seoul where he had been hospitalized since July 2020 when he collapsed after suffering a cerebral haemorrhage, the church said in a statement.

“He conveyed the gospel of hope to the Korean people who fell into despair after the Korean War,” the church said in a statement. “He was instrumental in growing the Korean church, particularly developing Yoido Full Gospel Church as the world’s largest church.”

Yonggi Cho is survived by three sons. His funeral is set for Saturday, and the church will receive mourners from Wednesday, according to the church
