A group of Northern Nigeria political power brokers have set machinery in process to reconcile former President Olusegun Obasanjo and his former deputy, Atiku Abubakar following their decision to back Atiku as the man to take over power from President Muhammadu Buhari.

The prominent northerners are said to include among others Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, Gen. Theophilus Danjuma, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, Gen. Aliyu Gusau and a civilian, Prof. Ango Abdullahi.

The group it was learnt, believed that Atiku was the best of the lot among PDP presidential materials to wrest power from Buhari and also best prepared to lead the country in the face of the divisions the northerners claimed have been made by Buhari.

“All of them have a common faith in this country and they believe that Atiku is best prepared to heal the divisions in the country,” a source privy to the information told gwgng.com.

“They, however, faced the problem of the problem of Obasanjo who is one of them, at least in shaping the affairs of the country. They have as such decided to reconcile Atiku with Obasanjo,” the source added.

Continuing, he said:

“When it was time to produce a replacement for him (Obasanjo) as president, they said that they allowed him to produce President Yar`Adua, and when President Yar`Adua died, they also allowed Obasanjo to produce Jonathan for one more term.

“But he cannot keep deciding for the North, he must accept the fact that the North wants what is best for it an they have as such decided to give it to Obasanjo that he has to accept Atiku,” the source privy to the decision of the power brokers who reached the decision on Atiku at a meeting last week said.
