October I Anniversary: Air Force Pilot Dies After Crash

A Nigerian Air Force pilot involved in rehearsals ahead of Monday’s October 1 Independence Day anniversary has died, according to air force spokesman Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola.

The pilot whose name has not been released died following a crash caused by a mid air collision with another military plane involved in the rehearsal. The crash happened in the Katampe area of Abuja.

He reportedly died on his way to the hospital

“It is with a heavy heart that I regretfully announce that one of the pilots who successfully ejected from one of the F-7Ni aircraft that crashed earlier today has passed on. May his soul RIP,” the air force announced.

Earlier, the air force spokesman had announced the crash saying:

“I wish confirm an air incident involving 2 Nigerian Air Force aircraft taking part in the rehearsals for the 58th Independence Day Celebrations. Thankfully no lives were lost. Details will be communicated later. Thank you.”
