Election observers without proper Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC identification tags moving around during polling hours will be arrested, Acting Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu has warned.

Speaking when he received a delegation of foreign observers in his office on Friday, Adamu said that the measure was taken to stop miscreants from infiltrating into the ranks of genuine election observers.

The delegation of foreign observers from the International Republican Institute, IRI, and the National Democratic Institute, NDI, was led by Mr. Festus Mogae, a former president of Botswana.

“In order to protect those that are on essential duties like foreign observers, local observers, and those on medical assignment, we have provided armed police personnel, that will provide security.

“But, because they are carrying arms, they will not go close to the polling units”, the IGP said.

“So, every local observer, or foreign observer, we expect you to carry tags, so that we will identify you on election day. Because, we don’t want those that have nothing to do, no business to do with observation of the process (to infiltrate you).

“Therefore, we expect that you carry tour identification tags, so that when we see you on the field, we can give you the protection that you require.

“But, when we see those without the tag, we believe they are people that want to disrupt the process, and we take them out of the system.”
