Africa and Nigeria’s second fastest man, Divine Oduduru has taken to the advice of his university coach and dropped out of his final year to exploit the prospects of reaping at least $350,000 in prize money over the next five years.

The 22-year-old, Ughelli, Delta State born athlete had been impressive leading his Texas Technical University to win the 100m and 200m in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championships last Friday

Following the feat, his coach, Wes Kittley had said:

“I’m going to encourage him to. He’d turn down too much money. He can tweak his hamstring next year and get nothing. How are you going to turn down $350,000 for five years or $400,000 for five years or $500,000 for five years — two and a half million dollars?

“You can’t do it. Not in our world. Not in the track world. I mean, that’s a lot. He’s a sprinter, so he has an opportunity to get some of that bigger money.”

Confirming his decision to drop, out of his final season, Oduduru said “I want to say thank you to Texas Tech University for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to come study here.”

He also thanked all members of the Tech University team.

Oduduru was the gold medalist in both the 100 metres and 200 metres at the 2013 African Youth Athletics Championships.
