Senate President Insists Probe Must Continue
The President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan on Wednesday directed the Senate ad-hoc committee investigating the assault allegation against Senator Elisha Abbo at a sex toy shop to press on after it reported reaching a deadlock.
The Senator Sam Egwu led committee which was supposed to report on Tuesday had on Wednesday told the Senate that its investigations reached a deadlock after it reported that witnesses appearing before it claimed the case was in court.
Senator Egwu said the senator involved in the centre of the allegation pleaded the claim alongside the FCT commissioner of police who also pleaded likewise.
The committee was constituted after a senator alleged that the viral report of Senator Abbo reportedly assaulting a nursing mother at a sex-toy shop had violated his privilege as a senator.
Reporting on behalf of the committee on Wednesday, Senator Egwu sought for extension of time on the premise of the fact that the witnesses claimed that it was a criminal matter and hence their inability to speak on the matter.
He said that the committee has also not been able to get a report from the victim.
“In the cause of our interaction, he made it clear to us that he has been invited by the police where he was detained for 24 hours and thereafter charged to court.
“The case is already in Court and it is sub judice and that he cannot go ahead and give us any information.
“Thereafter, we invited the police and the CP of Abuja, who came and told us the IG of police asked him to investigate the matter.
“He also went ahead to tell us that the case is in court and sub-judice. Therefore, he cannot give us further details.
Senator Lawan, however, affirmed that the Senate was not investigating a criminal matter but an issue having to do with the conduct of a senator.
He thus directed the committee to press ahead with its work.
“Let me clarify this We are not investigating criminal. We are investigating misconduct.
“The Senate is not investigating what the Police is investigating. The Senator who raised point of order came under privileged.
“This privilege is about the Senator’s misconduct that could be attributed to everybody as a Senator or the entire Senate.”
