The political faceoff in Kwara State between supporters of Governor Abdulrahman and Abdulrazaq and the minister of information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed deepened on Monday after the chairman of the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Alhaji Bashir Bolarinwa was handed a seven-day deadline to resign.

The demand for the party chairman’s resignation was given by Kwara Youth Congress, KYCO which accused him of disloyalty to the governor.

The chairman who is an ally of Alhaji Mohammed was alleged to have referred to the minister as the leader of the party at a post-inauguration reception for Mohammed despite the presence of the governor.

Though neither the governor nor the minister has spoken on the alleged face-off between their supporters, some party stakeholders in the South have in recent times moved to bring the minister into the fray.

KYCO’s demand on the party chairman followed a statement last week in which he was quoted to have praised the governor on his 100th day in office.

KYCO said the congratulations by the chairman to the governor was begging the issue of his alleged disloyalty which they said had not been addressed.

KYCO which includes the Ilorin Emirate Youths Assembly,

Kwara South Movement for Peace and Unity, and Transparency Advocates among other groups in a statement signed by its spokesman, Mallam Ibrahim Abdullahi said:

“We read with dismay the press release issued and signed by the Kwara  APC Chairman, Bolarinwa Omolaja Bashir, BOB on 30th of August 2019.

“We want to note that the release does not constitute an apology by the Chairman for his arrogance and for verbally insulting our Governor at a meeting of the Executive of the party in the state and at the reception in honour of Minister of Information Alh. Lai Mohammed in Abuja.

“As stated before, the genesis of his anger and arrogance was due to the fact that the Governor refused to provide the sum of 10 million Naira to the party to travel to Abuja for a one day event.

“The avoidance of an apology as demanded by us for the Chairman’s unwarranted rudeness to the Governor and by default to the people of the state who voted en mass for AA is not acceptable.

“Never in the history of politics in Kwara state has any Governor been so treated by any party Chairman. He has betrayed the trust of the numerous KWARANS who said OTOOGE Loud and Clear in the last elections.

“The OTOOGE mantra was not only for the Saraki’s dynasty in Kwara but to the likes of Saraki’s politics anywhere in our state. We would not be enslaved again by anyone or group.

“No more Godfather in kwara politics ever; either directly or indirectly. BOB and his people want to keep playing the same old politics of Godfathers  and we would not be docile again and watch such fester.

“Kwara is no longer anyone’s political enterprise but that of the people of Kwara.

“The Chairman has shown disloyalty to the Governor of Kwara state and her people. In politics, loyalty is total.

“Once there is an element of disloyalty, no matter how little, not to talk of as publicly exhibited by BOB, it is an unforgivable one and he must pay for such a treacherous action.

“The chairman in his further display of arrogance and hostility against the supporters of the government, he ordered the arrest of Kwara Must Change Convener, KMC Abdulrasaq Hamzat at his residence in Fate, Ilorin over a purported call for his resignation.

“We therefore stand on our earlier call for the Chairman to apologise to the Governor and people of Kwara state and resign.

“Failure of the Chairman to do that, we shall occupy his office at the party secretariat after the said expiration date..”
