The National Youth Service Corp, NYSC has reacted to the controversy arising from the expulsion of two corps members from Ebonyi State over their refusal to wear the required trouser in camp.

Adenike Adeyemi, the NYSC Director of Press and Public Relations speaking for the first time on the issue also defended the Corp’s decision to allow female Muslims were the hijab as part of the uniform.

Adeyemi spoke to TVC’s Your View programme on Monday.

According to her, the NYSC uniform “was not designed against any faith, it is designed based on the kind of training that they go through in the camp.”

“This uniform has been part of our story and is our brand. Why would an individual want to change it after 46 years? Why would an individual consider it that it is against my religion? No! It is not against any religion and it is not against any gender.”

On why the NYSC has not adapted to change in societal norms over the period?

“Definitely, the constant thing is change but change is done when something is bad and you progress to the point where something is better and more befitting.

“Is there any religion saying that what we have at the NYSC is bad?

“The uniform that the NYSC has now is not immoral and it doesn’t expose any part of anybody’s body,” she added.

But challenged on the change that accommodated hijab, she said:

“It was not a change. It has always been part of the NYSC. The hijab does not redesign the NYSC uniform. The hijab does not change the trouser spec, the hijab does not change any part of the NYSC uniform as given.

“The NYSC has over the years allowed the short hijab for Muslim ladies who want to wear the hijab and so they wear the short hijab and they tuck it into the uniform,” she said.
