A bill seeking to confer immunity on presiding officers of federal and state legislative houses scaled through second reading in the House of Representatives.

The bill is sponsored by Mr. Olusegun Odebunmi despite opposition from many lawmakers.

It seeks to alter section 308 of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to extend immunity to cover presiding officers of legislative Institutions.

Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila while commenting on the bill observed that he would not benefit from the provisions of the bill if it is passed and assented to during his speakership.

He said he would support the bill to take effect from 2023 after the tenure of the current leadership.

The lawmakers later resolved that the bill should be pushed to Nigerians, through a public hearing, to decide the bill.
