Nigerians have taken to the microblogging platform, Twitter, to applaud the action of the Senate minority leader, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe in raising strong objection to the procedure adopted by Senate President Ahmad Lawan in pushing through President Muhammadu Buhari’s request to borrow $22.7bn on Thursday.

Senator Abaribe was critical of the refusal to follow procedure in passing the request which was turned down by the 8th Senate.

Buhari submitted the $22.7bn loan request to Senate, November 2019, in a view to finance the capital component of the 2020 budget.

Reacting on the floor on Thursday, Senator Abaribe said, “All I wanted to point out which we are finding out on this floor that you don’t want us to do is that we are saying there are some aspects to the loan that we must have to vote on, to decide if they are in our interest or not.

“The Senate leader says that is what he wants also. Now we want to make our input, we are being told, either pass or not pass, and I think that is not very good for the economy of this country.”

Ahmed Lawan replied, “I don’t want the discussion of this loan to degenerate into partisanship. This is for our country.”

Abaribe insisted that the each item of the loan request should be deliberated upon and the report of the Senate committee on local and foreign debts should be looked at in the floor of the house.

The minority leader’s stance has earned him praises among many Nigerians, who believed that, he is playing an opposition role in the Senate, just like former senator Dino Melaye.
