The finance minister of Germany’s Hesse region, Thomas Schaefer has been found dead apparently after committing suicide, officials said.

Scheefer, 54, who has been the finance minister of the Hesse region which includes the economic hub of Frankfurt, it was reported, had been overwhelmed with the financial implications arising from the COVID-19 epidemic

Schaefer, was a member of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union. He was found Saturday on railway tracks at Hochheim, near Frankfurt official sources disclosed.

Governor of the region, Volker Bouffier said Schaefer’s death was linked to the coronavirus crisis.

According to him, the deceased had been worried about “whether it would be possible to succeed in fulfilling the population’s huge expectations, particularly of financial help.”

“I have to assume that these worries overwhelmed him,” Bouffier said. “He apparently couldn’t find a way out. He was in despair and left us.”

The Federal Government and state governments had drawn up packages to cushion the effect of the crisis on public life.
