An Indian couple has named its newly born twin children Covid and Corona it was revealed on Friday.

The couple based in Raipur, the capital city of Chhattisgarh State in central India noted that the names would serve as a reminder to them of the hardship and suffering faced during the COVID-19 lockdown.

In most countries of the world, including India and Nigeria, national governments have declared a total or partial lockdown, in a bid to halt movement of people in a view to curtail the spread of the virus.

I was blessed with the twins, a boy and a girl, in the early hours on March 27. We have named them Covid (boy) and Corona (girl) for now.

In a report by The Hindu, Preeti Verma, the 27-old mother of the twins said, “I was blessed with the twins, a boy and a girl, in the early hours on March 27. We have named them Covid (boy) and Corona (girl) for now.

“The delivery happened after facing several difficulties and therefore, I and my husband wanted to make the day memorable.”

Verma experienced severe labour pains, occasioned by the lockdown in India and on the night of March 26, she encountered several police roadblocks on the road but was allowed to go due to her condition.

Explaining the reasons for the naming , she said, “Indeed the virus is dangerous and life-threatening but its outbreak made people focus on sanitation, hygiene and inculcate other good habits. Thus, we thought about these names.

“When the hospital staff also started calling the babies as Corona and Covid, we finally decided to name them after the pandemic”.

The couple already has a two-year-old daughter.
